The Civic Engagement Commission was established by the voters of New York City as part of an amendment to the City Charter adopted in 2018.
The Commission’s mission is to enhance civic participation, promote civic trust, and strengthen democracy in New York City.
The Commission will:
- Run a citywide participatory budgeting program with guidance from a participatory budgeting advisory committee
- Partner with community-based organizations and civic leaders, increase awareness of City services, and assist New York City agencies in developing civic engagement initiatives
- Develop a plan to help limited English proficient New Yorkers take part in the Commission’s programs and services and provide language interpreters at poll sites, with advice from a language assistance advisory committee
- Provide assistance to community boards
