Across the country, 211 is the number to call for health and human services information and referrals. In New York City, this service is provided through 311.
You can get local 211 numbers for all other New York State counties. If you live outside New York State, you can search online for your local 211.

The City uses NYC311 Skype to provide greater access to public information about New York City.
Through Skype, a software application that allows you to make calls over the internet, people from around the world are able to call 311 for free when they add NYC311 as one of their Skype contacts.
NYC311 Online can provide you with information and access to New York City government services.
You can submit certain types of Service Requests online. If you provide a valid email address, you will receive an email with your Service Request Number. NYC311 will send your Service Request to the appropriate Agency. The Agency will follow up whether or not you get an email.
You can check the status of a Service Request on the NYC311 Online homepage, even if you made the request or complaint by phone. You must enter the Service Request number to check the status.
Languages Supported
NYC311 Online offers an automated translation tool on the top right-hand side of each page within the site. This tool can translate the site into over 100 languages.

You can get non-emergency information by text 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an SMS-capable mobile device, you can text a question about City services to 311-692 and get an immediate response. You can also file several types of complaints.
The City does not charge for this service, but your text messaging or data rates may apply.

When you sign up for a NYC311 Account, you will be able to create a profile where you can choose your preferred language, customize how you receive Service Request updates, and update your contact information. The Service Requests you create using your NYC311 Account are saved to a list for easy reference.
