If you need to replace a photo document or license plate lost in a crime, you can go in person to a police precinct and have form MV-78B filled out by the police. If no crime was involved, you can complete form MV-44. To replace vanity plates, call the DMV Custom Plates Unit.
All vehicles registered in New York must be inspected every 12 months to maintain a valid registration. After passing the inspection, you'll get an sticker that you must display on your vehicle. You may get a parking ticket if you don't display an inspection sticker or if it's expired.
If you buy a vehicle from an auto dealer in another state, your vehicle must also pass an inspection to register it with New York State.
