Mail-In and Drop Box Services

DMV Offices are processing registrations and other transactions by mail. They are also accepting transactions through secure drop boxes located at each office.

Road Tests

Fully vaccinated individuals do not need to be socially distanced. Unvaccinated/unknown vaccination status individuals need to maintain six feet of social distance from other customers and staff, whenever possible.

All individuals are required to wear face coverings during road tests. You must also disinfect the passenger side of the vehicle with disinfectant wipes before the test.

On November 1, 2020, a new seat belt law went into effect in New York State. All drivers and passengers must buckle up regardless of age or where they sit in the vehicle.

Wearing a seatbelt is required in personal cars and when riding in a taxi or for-hire vehicle (FHV), including on app-based trips.

The penalty for a seat belt violation is a fine of up to $50 for the passenger and up to $100 and 3 points for the driver if a child under 16 is not properly buckled.

If you are riding with a child in a taxi or for-hire vehicle, you are encouraged to bring your own car seat. The driver must allow you to install your car seat.

You can make complaints about the Department of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) local offices and employees to New York State by phone or mail.

Complaints against DMV judges must be made in writing.

The Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is also known as the Defensive Driving Course or Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course. Private companies and organizations throughout New York State offer this course.

Completing an approved course will:

Refresh your driving knowledge
Help to prevent you from losing your license in the event you accrued 11 or more points on your driving record
Reduce the base rate of your auto and motorcycle insurance premiums 10% each year for three years

Completing a course does not:

Prevent a mandatory suspension or revocation
Eliminate your responsibility to pay a driver responsibility assessment
Give you a way to reduce future driver violation points
