HIV Prevention

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) medicines can help prevent HIV infection.

Health service providers, community organizations, and others can order pamphlets, postcards, and posters to help promote public awareness of both PrEP and PEP.

If you think you have been exposed to HIV, go immediately to an NYC Sexual Health Clinic or emergency room and ask for PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) or call the NYC PEP 24/7 Hotline.

PEP is an emergency medicine for people who are HIV negative and may have been exposed to HIV.

• Emergency PEP works best if started right away.
• You should begin PEP within 72 hours after a potential exposure to HIV.
• PEP is taken for 28-days.

In New York State, most insurance plans including Medicaid cover PEP. If you do not have insurance, there are medical clinics that can help you get PEP.
