Auxiliary police are uniformed members of the NYPD. They help prevent crime through regular patrols and by providing assistance at major incidents. The program welcomes people who have a sense of community and public service or an interest in a career in law enforcement.
Auxiliary police officers must:
- Be at least 17 years of age
- Live in New York City or work in New York City and live in one of the six authorized surrounding counties (Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, or Putnam)
- Be in good health
- Be able to read and write English
- Never have been convicted of a felony or arrested for a serious crime
- Have United States citizenship, a valid visa, or an alien registration card
