The Department of Transportation (DOT) grants permits to private and public contractors to make street excavations in order to repair or maintain their subsurface utilities. These permits are granted with the requirement that the contractor restore the street surface upon completion of its project.
You can make a complaint about street restorations with any of the following defects:
- The filled excavation is heaped above the level of the street
- The filled area has sunken an inch or more below the level of the street
- The filled area has developed a pothole, depression or cave-in
Street restorations include:
- Street cuts
- Trenches
- Square or rectangular shapes
DOT will inspect and issue violations to the responsible entity if warranted.
